Amir Haji Akbari Balou was born in Urmia, Iran in 1981. After finishing high school, he moved to Tehran to attend the prestigious Direct PhD Program of Biotechnology at College of Science, University of Tehran. This interdisciplinary program admits 10-14 students annually and directly leads to a Ph.D. degree though Bachelor's and Master's degrees are awarded at intermittent stages of the program. Admission is competitive and is confined to the medal awardees of national and international scientific olympiads, and the 0.01 % top percentile of the nationwide entrance exam for colleges and university in Iran (known as Konkoor). The curriculum is also very diverse and spans a wide range of courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and chemical engineering, in order to train students for interdisciplinary scholarly research.
