Prof Chen received his bachelor’s degree from Zhejiang University, and his PhD in Materials Science from Arizona State University. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University before joining HKUST. He holds a joint appointment at the Department of Chemistry. Prof Chen's research applies materials science and electrochemistry to understand and control self-organization at nanoscales. The same knowledge set guides the design of electrochemical devices such as redox flow batteries for grid-scale electricity storage.
Morphology evolution of materials; nanoporous metal structures; energy storage, in particular, redox flow batteries.
