Biography

My research interests are primarily on glaucoma surgery and how best to achieve optimal results. Specifically the interaction between cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery and the influence of one on the other and how this changes outcome, has been the focus of most of my research output to date. I intend to continue this theme. The question of how best to manage a patient with co-existing uncontrolled glaucoma and cataract is yet to be resolved and several of my publications have provided important data in this regard. There remain gaps in the literature which I have identified and my aim for the next few years is to fill these gaps with well-designed, relevant studies. I hope that after 3 years I will have contributed significantly to the literature on this topic this will be a significant contribution to ophthalmic clinical science. Furthermore, these data will be very relevant clinically and readily applicable to the majority of consultants, both general and glaucoma specialists, all over the world. If I am able to show that the data supports a certain management strategy is superior to others I terms of efficacy and safety, due the huge numbers of patients worldwide with glaucoma and cataract, I hope my contribution will be significant and real. A related area of research is the growing interest in the ophthalmic research community on ‘phaco-plus’ procedures for glaucoma patients. This is an exciting area which has relevance to my own research interests as described above.
