Professor Kurt-W. Bütow has had his training at various Universities and received the following degrees: BSc[Chemistry and Botany-Biochemistry](RAU), BChD, MChD[in Maxillo‑Facial and Oral Surgery](Stell), DrMedDent(Erlangen), PhD, DSc[Odont](Pret), a Colleges of Medicine of South Africa fellowship(pr), FCMFOS(SA), and fellowships by invitation was conferred in England and USA as LFIBA and FABI. He is the only South African Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeon who is registered with a professional doctor title and holds three academic doctor titles. In August 1983 he was appointed Professor/Chief Specialist in Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgery and in October 1984 as Head of the Department at the University of Pretoria and Honorary Consultant of the Military No. 1 - Hospital of South Africa and retired in 30th April 2013. He is the fourth departmental head in Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgery of the University of Pretoria and is the longest serving one (27 years) in South Africa. The Facial Cleft Deformity Clinic, the largest in Africa (2nd largest in the Southern Hemisphere?) with more than 4000 patients, was established by him. Professor Bütow is and was associated with 17 national and international Professional Bodies, has published more than 360 scientific papers/abstracts (more than 120 on cleft treatment), including five books (2 on cleft treatment) / CDs or chapters in books, and presented more than 390 (more than 180 on invitation) extra-curricular lectures, nationally and internationally in countries such as Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, Republic of China, People’s Republic of China (including HongKong), Germany, Israel, Maldives, Namibia, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, Sychelles and USA. Various awards and honours have been conferred on him, as the Elida-Ponds Research Award and Fellowship, Deans Award, Faculty Silver Medal, Top Achiever of the University of Pretoria - seven times, National Research Foundation Rating, Commemorative Research Medal - University of Pretoria’s Centenary Celebration for honouring their Leading Minds, Video Tribute presented at the Australasian Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, - International Cleft Palate Foundation (ICPF) - Lifetime Achievement Award (Gold medal & Plaque), Destinguished Fellow of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgerons (IAOMS) with a penning in gold with dimonds, cited in Southern African Trade, Business and Industry, International Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care, Who’s Who of Intellectuals and Who’s Who in the World. His main hobbies is and were flying (fix-wing: commercial pilot licence, test pilot II, instrument and multi-engine ratings, presently helicopter: ppl), painting (oils and acrylic) and family-ancestory.
