My research is funded by a NISCHR social care PhD studentship, examining the effects of a stroke on the relationship between the stroke survivor and their family carer (spouse) over the longer term. The project adopts a realist evaluation approach, which attempts to generate theoretical explanations about stroke impacts, family adaptation and the consequences of professional interventions. The research utilises several methodological approaches, including dyadic qualitative interviews that involve talking to couples together about the aftermath of a stroke. Conclusions from this research can be used to implement a service based support framework for all stroke associated staff that recognises the impact of stroke on family relationships.
