Biography

Michael Englesbe, MD, FACS is the Cyrenus G Darling Sr M.D. and Cyrenus G Darling Jr M.D. Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan in the Section of Transplantation Surgery. Dr. Englesbe received his undergraduate degree at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut in 1993. He went on to obtain his medical degree in 1997 from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Michigan Health System in 2004. From 2000 to 2002, Dr. Englesbe did a surgical research post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.

Research Intrest

Dr. Englesbe specializes in kidney and liver transplantation in adults and children. He has a specific expertise in portal hypertension in children and adults. Dr. Englesbe has an active research group. The focus is improving the quality and efficiency of surgical care. His current work uses analytic morphomic techniques to assess patient risk, and then investigate ways to mitigate these risks through physical activity. He is also working to understand and combat the opioid crisis in Michigan. He is the Associate Director of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative. He directs the Michigan Surgical Home and Optimization Program. He co-directs the Michigan Opioid Prescribing and Engagement Network. He has funding for his work from the National Institute of Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan, and Michigan – Health and Human Services.
