My research concentrates on functioning of the pelagic ecosystems, in particular with regard to food-web processes and vertical fluxes. These processes have a central role in determining, respectively, the trophic transfer efficiency, and the efficiency of the ocean biological pump. The trophic transfer efficiency of the food web eventually determines the food availability of the planktivorous fish (such as herring), while the efficiency of ocean’s biological pump determines how much of the anthropogenic CO2 emissions the ocean can take up and how long it sequesters it. Â
