Dr. Jane Gwiazda joined the faculty of The New England College of Optometry in 1995 as part of the College’s initiative to become a leading myopia research institution. She brings 30 years of experience as a vision scientist to her current positions of both director of research and professor of vision science. Although she has previously conducted multiple studies on infant vision development, Dr. Gwiazda’s research interests have since shifted to include both the risk factors and treatments of myopia. In previous years at the College, Dr. Gwiazda was an instructor for the courses Integrative Seminar, Research Honors Seminar, and Theory and Methods of Vision Testing. Dr. Gwiazda is principal investigator and founding chairperson of the Correction of Myopia Evaluation Trial (COMET), a national, multi-site randomized clinical trial that evaluated whether or not progressive additional lenses were more effective than single vision lenses in slowing the progression of juvenile-onset myopia. She developed the COMET study in collaboration with the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health, and recruited clinical investigators to lead the study at four clinical trial sites. COMET, which began in 1996, was the first clinical trial in optometry and is now a longitudinal investigation of the progression and stabilization of myopia. Dr. Gwiazda is an editorial board member for the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Vision Science and the Journal of Optometry. Dr. Gwiazda earned both her master’s and PhD degrees in experimental psychology from Northeastern University. She is currently a fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Optometry.
