I teach undergraduate modules dedicated to the painting and sculpture of the Italian Renaissance, and the visual art of seventeenth-century Europe, as well as a seminar for final-year students on art and religion in the Hispanic world.
I have a long-standing interest in the history of still-life and genre painting in Spain and Italy, and have been involved in a number of exhibitions in this area. My research interests generally focus on the visual art of seventeenth-century Spain and include the following: the production, market, and collecting of different types of visual art; originals and copies; the relationships between “masters” and “followers”; the techniques of art; art and patronage in Seville; the relationship between art and plague; and the portraiture of Velázquez and his circle, on which I am currently writing a book.
