Prof. Costas Karabatsas is a GMC registered specialist in Ophthalmology in the United Kingdom since 1995, equally certified in Ophthalmology by the European Board of Ophthalmology, as well as the Greek Ministry of Health. He has an extensive surgical as well as teaching experience in various areas of Ophthalmology. He is a sub-specialist in the following areas : ï‚· cornea and external eye diseases • refractive surgery ï‚· cataract • glaucoma Dr. Karabatsas holds the title of As. Professor (Ophthalmology) at the Technological Education Institute of Athens, Greece, Department of Optics & Optometry. Previously (1999-2006) he has served as As. Professor of Ophthalmology with Thessaly University Medical School, in Central Greece. Currently, he is also a Senior Consultant Anterior Segment Eye Surgeon (Refractive Surgery, Cataract, Cornea & External Eye Diseases, Glaucoma) at LASERVISION.GR Eye Center in Athens, Greece. He has undertaken his basic and specialized training as a resident, a registrar, a cornea fellow and a clinical lecturer at Bristol Eye Hospital, in the UK. He accomplished his doctorate thesis (D.Med) on corneal transplantation and corneal topography, with the University of Bristol. After successful exams he became a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London (MRCOphth), a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh (FRCS Ed) in Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology, Paris (FEBO). He has achieved recognition as a leader in the field of corneal transplantation, corneal topography, surgical correction of astigmatism and has directed clinical research in his University department on glaucoma, cornea and external diseases. He has been principal investigator on devices, clinical studies on keratoplasty and external diseases, clinical drug trials, gene identification studies and biochemical studies on alterations of aqueous humor in pseudoexfoliation syndrome. Prof. Karabatsas has over 50 peer-reviewed publications to his credit, has lectured extensively to national and international audiences , and has presented a maltitude of scientific papers mainly on the subjects of glaucoma, cataract and corneal diseases. He has also acted as an instructor for different surgical courses worldwide and as an Honorable Editor and reviewer in various ophthalmic scientific journals. He is involved with several professional associations and national committees. He is the General Secretary of the Greek Corneal Society (GCS) and the Treasurer of the Hellenic College of Ophthalmology (HCO). He also holds Membership with the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), the International Glaucoma Society (IGS) and the European Glaucoma Society (EGS).
