Biography

An ophthalmologist is a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the visual pathways. Areas of concentration are the regions surrounding the eye, including tear ducts and eyelids. Ophthalmologists are trained in eye surgery, including laser eye surgery (LASIK), which involves using a laser to reconstruct the cornea. Subspecialties within ophthalmology focus on cataracts, glaucoma and ocular oncology. Ophthalmologists can also specialize in pediatric ophthalmology, dealing with diseases of the visual pathways in children. An ophthalmologist should not be confused with an optometrist, who can perform eye exams and prescribe corrective lenses, or opticians, who are trained to grind lenses.
