Dr. Parke is Executive Vice President and CEO of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the world’s largest ophthalmology organization, with more than 32,000 members. Previously, Dr. Parke was President and CEO of the Dean McGee Eye Institute and Edward L. Gaylord Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. During his 17-year tenure, the Institute became one of America’s largest eye institutes and ranked consistently among the top institutions nationally in terms of National Institutes of Health vision research grant support. A practicing ophthalmologist with sub-specialty focus in retina/vitreous, Dr. Parke was President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2008. A fellow of the Academy, he received its Life Achievement Honor Award in 2009. He has held several leadership positions on multiple professional boards; he is a founding member of MedEncentive, a company integrating evidence-based medicine into payment models and is on the board of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC) of FIGMD, and previously chaired the Board of Directors of the Academic Physicians Insurance Company and of Medem, Inc. Dr. Parke has served on the editorial board of two ophthalmic journals and was Executive Editor of the American Journal of Ophthalmology. A recipient of numerous biomedical research grants and professional honors, he has lectured on a variety of topics. In 2009 he was elected to Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis, an international body limited to 80 active members committed to global vision research, education and service.
