Dr. Shaoying (Kathy) Lu obtained a B.S. and M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1995 and 1997, respectively. Dr. Lu received a Ph. D. in Computational Mathematics from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) in 2004, and she continued her postdoctoral work at UCSD as a La Jolla Interface Science Fellow under Bioengineering professor Andrew McCulloch and Drs. Randolph Bank and Michael Holst in the Department of Mathematics. Before joining UCSD as an assistant project scientist in 2013, Dr. Lu worked as a research assistant professor at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Lu is a recipient of a National Science Foundation MATH/BIO Initiative Award and a key personnel contributing to several National Institutes of Health Awards. Dr. Lu teaches undergraduate courses in Linear Algebra and Vector Calculus. She also contributes to journal publications and open-source image analysis software packages. Dr. Lu’s research focuses on image-driven mathematical and systems biology. Her group develops computational algorithms and statistical inference methods for the high throughput analysis of biological data, with applications in molecular transport and live-cell imaging for cancer biology and epigenetic differentiation of stem cells.
