Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition characterized by patches of the skin losing their pigment. The patches of skin affected become white and usually have sharp margins. The hair from the skin may also become white. The inside of the mouth and nose may also be involved. Vitiligo occurs when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) die or stop producing melanin- the pigment that gives your skin, hair and eyes color. The involved patches of skin become lighter or white. A trigger event, such as stress, severe sunburn or skin trauma, such as contact with a chemical.
